La Serpiente

Ciudad de México, 1986

En un terreno con lava volcánica cerca de la pirámide circular de Cuicuilco en Ciudad Universitaria, se desarrolló este anteproyecto de doce institutos interdisciplinarios. El acceso a cada instituto es por el circuito de autos, los estacionamientos se localizan a un lado de los institutos, siguiendo la topografía del lugar; los muros inclinados que se aprecian en el corte se construyen con la misma lava volcánica que se remueve para desplantar el edificio.

En la planta baja se ubicaron las bibliotecas, por tener más área y peso; en el primer nivel las zonas administrativas y en el segundo nivel los cubículos de los investigadores. Por la azotea verde se puede circular a los diferentes institutos y a la zona de auditorios y cafetería que se ubican en la cabeza de la serpiente; o desde el exterior entrar por las fauces (boca) de la misma y en la cola que se enrolla imitando la piramide de Cuicuilco, se ubica la coordinación de los institutos.

The Snake

This draft project for twelve interdisciplinary institutes is located on a lava bed near the circular pyramid of Cuicuilco in Ciudad Universitaria. The entrance to each institute is by way of the road circuit, with parking located to one side of the institutes, adapted to the topography of the site. The slanted walls, which can be seen in section, are of the local volcanic stone, quarried to make room for the complex.

On the ground floor are the libraries, the most spacious and weightiest areas. On the second floor are the administrative areas and on the third floor the research cubicles. The garden rooftop interconnects the various institutes as well as the auditoriums and cafeteria located in the serpent’s head. There is an entrance through the serpent’s jaws. At the other end, where the tail is coiled in imitation of the Cuicuilco pyramid, is the office that coordinates the interactions of the different institutes.
